The Academy

The Academy

One of Aberystwyth's largest pubs, housed in a converted church.

The main room is bright, open-plan and lively with big seating areas for large groups, a gallery level and big screen. Busy with standing crowds on Friday and Saturday nights; much quieter during the day when food is also served.

Away from the main bar, there's also a large games room with pool tables, table football and gaming machines.

Not a bad place to go on a night out. For students, I'd recommend staying away on a Saturday as it tends to fill up with older locals. On the other hand they sell absinthe behind the bar.
Nice place to go for a drink in the day; an OK stop off point on the way to Why Not at night.

Really nice place during the day and night. Food is good and drinks are reasonably priced. Cheap tequila if I remember rightly. Just needs some more seats, especially when the football is on!

Older Comments about the Academy

"Not a bad place: loads of room, comfy seats, nice food." - Jimmy Martin, Telford [May 2008]
"If anybody knocks this pub it is obvious that they don't know a good night out; this is the perfect warm-up bar, ideal from about 10 - 11.30. People who recommend other places like the Orangery don;t understand the genre of this pub: it's not a semi-classy wine bar and it has never tried to be, it is good honest fun with plenty of room, large bars and good people. If you want a more sophisticted night out with tuxes and expensive Champers don't go here; if you want a really fun bar wth great people and a great drinking atmosphere this is your place!" - Tony [Dec 2007]
"A novelty when first opened - has gone to the dogs now." - taurus1977 [Nov 2007]
"Great place to go if the upstairs is open but if it is closed off then you won't find a seat." - Jim [May 2007]
"Really nice - you can go and get absolutely wasted or just go for a quiet drink. Pool tables and foosball too. The only downfall is that it closes early around 10:30 to 11:00." - Geraint Humphreys [Sep 2006]
"Shame, could have been converted into a much more successful space, like The Orangery has done. But, it's still an amazing old building, just not enough chairs and tables. Drinks are OK, hot chocolate pretty damn good. Could be a lot better, but we still quite like the place." - Dean & Pai, Aberystwyth [May 2006]
