Long-established and cosy little Italian restaurant.

In operation for many a year, this is Aberystwyth's version of an Italian restaurant. A large, but traditional, menu caters for most tastes.

I like Little Italy. It's got a nice vibe to the place - The staff are usually competent and friendly, though rushed off their feet, and the decor is sweet if a little kitzch: the architecture of the building lends itself well to being a romantic Italian grotto. But don't order starters. Order risotto, the risotto is particularly good. Just don't order starters. For the love of ... well, your own gut, don't order starters, because you'll try to finish them, and then you'll try to finish your dinner, and then you'll finish your night too early because you'll be incapable of doing anything but calling a taxi and rolling onto the sofa. Mostly, food is average, with overly generous portions. But the risotto is really surprisingly good. A nice romantic meal if you don't order starters.

The food in this place is an insult to Italy! Wetherspoons or an Iceland readymeal are freshier, tastier and more authentic than what I have been served here. Made the mistake of going back again since it has many thumbs-up reviews. Shame really as there is no other italian restaurant in Aber. I'm consistently surprised by how busy it always is when walking past - yet it NEVER smells like there's any cooking going on! Where are those delicious garlicy aromas? Says it all really.

Not what I expected
We booked a table for 21:30 and arrived at 21:25, we were told that the table was not ready, I really didnt mind seeing that we were early. What I did find a little off putting was the reason that the owner gave us for the delay The people on your table have ordered liquor coffees He said this with a short but annoyed tone. I didnt see the need for this annoyance as I said we were more than happy to wait.
We eventually sat our table and ordered our starters and mains. When the food arrived it was very mediocre. The menu had lots of choice, far too much for them to possibly have fresh ingredients for all the dishes in my opinion, which seemed to be the case in the dishes we ordered.
The service was very poor when it came to pay the bill, I handed over my card which was put into the card machine, when it was handed back to me I was then asked to enter my pin, no big surprises there! The surprise came when there was no amount for me to confirm or see, I asked what amount was put in the machine and this when the waitress became somewhat annoyed! She stated that it was for the amount on the bill, I was made to feel very uncomfortable in the fact that I was blindly authorising a payment. The receipt did show the correct amount but I feel that the blind authorisation is a very poor customer experience.
Overall I think that if you are looking for Italian food that is cooked authentically, with fresh ingredients this is not really the place for you

Super little place great food/good service. Try the rissotto dishes with a little fresh chilli added for punch. The owner is a really friendly guy and nothing was too much trouble for him!

Went a few weeks back with several friends; the atmosphere was lovely and the service was great and the portions were very generous considering the pricing. I was thoroughly disappointed with my canneloni however as it tasted like shepherd's pie.

A nice cosy place, but much more quantity than quality. Veggies pretty good. An English Italian restaurant - I'm not sure that an Italian would recognise the dishes.

"I'm not a fan of this place. Food ranges from OK to not-so-OK. Feels cramped inside. A bit over-rated I think as it's the only Italian Aber has." - Emma W, London [May 2008]

"A friendly restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere and great food." - Charles [Mar 2008]

"An absolute mystery to me. The food is OK but the service is dire. The diners are treated as if they're an unnecesary inconvenience - yet the place is always full. Needs another Italian restaurant in Aber to give it some competition." - John Peters, Birmingham [Feb 2008]

"The mussels are amazing and the staff are warm and friendly; I'd reccommend it everytime." - Anon [Feb 2008]

"This is not Italian food! An over-priced place to eat with terrible food, wine and service - Italians would never do it this way! Simply awful." - Clare Bamford, Hereford [Jan 2008]

"Went on sunday, waitress very rude, food was lukewarm and tasteless, service was useless, lots of new staff needed." - Mrs Rees [Oct 2007]

"Nice setting, great menu and generous portions - also very busy for a Monday night, which should be a good sign. We started by sharing some cheesy garlic bread and olives - no problem there. However, the main courses received mixed reactions - two of us thoroughly enjoyed them, the other two didn't. One chicken breast was pink in the middle, so went uneaten (they deducted it from the bill, after initially suggesting that the lighting was too dim to tell what colour it was!). The Tiramisu was definitely the worst we had ever eaten - absolutely dreadful; stodgy and tasteless. Service slow and not particularly friendly. Shan't rush back." - Mark Brown, Cardiff [Aug 2007]

"Very slow service - garlic bread with cheese took 30 minutes. Good quality veg, and nice soft pasta while sauce was 'good for Britain' (says American girlfriend). Avoid the Sicilian chicken unless you like your bacon very salty though. The decor is charming, but can feel pretty crowded. This probably wasn't helped by the fact that despite making a booking and turning up on time, we were made to stand for 5 minutes while they prepared our table." - Huw and Kathryn [Aug 2007]
