Wetherspoon's

Wetherspoon's in Aberystwyth

Officially known as 'Yr Hen Orsaf', this typical chain pub is more usually known as simply 'Wetherspoon's' or 'Spoons'.

In general, a successful (but slightly bland) conversion of the huge old station building. As far as the food and drink goes, it's like any other Wetherspoons with a decent menu and good range of low-priced drinks.

We went on a Tuesday and had a steak with prawn skewers, my first and only critism was the prawn skewers were not edible, suitable only for the garbage. The pieces of prawns tasted like rubbers and the only thing worse than chewing it was having to swallow. Never order it.
However the rest of the food they serve is good generally, although sometimes it takes too long.

Visited this pub when we were waiting for a train. Although we didn't order food, it seemed like everyone around us had a cooked breakfast and it looked really nice. Helpful staff, HUGE toilets upstairs (would be handy when it's very busy) and nice modern decor.

Older Comments about Yr Hen Orsaf Wetherspoon's

"I think that the reviews that have been given and posted on this page are a little dated to say the least, I have known the pub for at least the last year, the staff are fun and add to the atmosphere, although some may take this too far but that is my main criticism. As for the food being so 'bad' something must have changed because I can't fault it! Yes it gets busy on weekends but that is a sign of a good pub and I think that it should be recognised as that." - Dave [Jun 2007]
"Food less than average but reasonable beer and typical 'Spoons' prices. General tidiness was poor - dirty glasses and plates left on tables for protracted periods on the day we visited." - Steve [Jun 2007]
"Not the best Wetherspoon's pub. Feels more like an enormous drinking warehouse than a pub. Beer not always well kept. You only get about 5 chips with your meal. Nice view of the trains leaving the station." - Pub Goer [Nov 2006]
"Good for a hair of the dog, but sadly nothing else." - Exaber [Aug 2006]
"Best railway waiting room I've ever been in. I wouldn't mind having to wait a couple of hours here." - Ianto [Aug 2006]
"The whole place needs shaken up from top to bottom." - T Morgan [Jul 2006]
"It's a Spoons so you already know what to expect before you step off the train (or walk in from town). Main time I go is when going home, funnily enough me and mates always seem to just miss train thus spend the next 2 hours sitting with pint waiting for train and if you ask me that's about all Spoons is good for." - Emma [Jun 2006]
"Food wait is due to it being the busiest pub in town for food, this is also the case for the wait at the bar. The only pub in town where the staff will answer you back if you treat them like idiots, which is a good thing: they actually have personalities!" - Anon [May 2006]
