Many towns and villages around Aberystwyth can be reached by public transport. Some more rural communities can be reached only by private car, bike or taxi.

Most local services use the bus station in Alexandra Road, while buses 550, X32, X40 and X50 use stops further along towards the Park Avenue roundabout.
If you plan to travel by bus, check times and routes online before travelling. Bus services are good, but the bus companies and the council are hopeless at providing useful information at bus stops. Most bus stops have either no timetable or route numbers displayed at all, the rest usually show incorrect or appallingly out-of-date information.
Taxi-Bus
Some areas without a bus service have council-subsidised taxi-buses. These run at set times and need to be booked in advance of travel. Local routes include:
- T21: Aberystwyth, Llanafan, Pontrhydygroes, Pontrhydfendigaid, Tregaron
- T22: Aberystwyth, Capel Seion, Pisgah, Devil's Bridge, Trisant, Cwmystwyth
- T27: Penbontrhydybeddau and Penrhyncoch (for bus to/from Aberystwyth)
- T29: Tregaron, Pontrhydfendigaid, Swyddffynnon, Ystrad Meurig

Trains
The railway provides a fast, two-hourly link to Borth, Machynlleth and stations along the west coast of Gwynedd such as Tywyn and Barmouth.
Return tickets issued between Aberystwyth, Borth and Machynlleth are valid on both train and relevant bus services from Mondays to Saturdays under a local '2-4-1' scheme. This means that when you buy a return bus or train ticket, you are free to make your return journey by either bus or rail - whichever suits you best!
Locally-resident, regular users of trains between Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Machynlleth and Shrewsbury may benefit by buying a Cambrian Railcard, which gives a third off most fares.
